Ear shaping or “otoplasty” is a surgical procedure to correct or improve the shape and appearance of the ear. Many patients, often beginning from a young age, are simply unhappy with the shape or size of their ears. For some, they stick out too far, and for others they are just too big. In certain cases, individuals are born with defects, while others may have a deformity caused by an accident or trauma to the ear. Ear shaping surgery can provide a simple and effective solution for most patients unhappy with the appearance of their ears.

A Description of the Procedure
Most ear shaping procedures use an incision behind the ear to gain access to the ear cartilage. On occasion an incision on the front side of the ear may also be needed. Regardless, the incisions are hidden and essentially invisible once healed. Excess soft tissue or cartilage causing the ear to “stick out too much” can be removed or shaped if needed. Additionally, if normal creases or folds are missing from the ear, they can be re-constructed by reshaping the cartilage and maintain that shape with internal sutures. Sometimes a combination of techniques will be employed to achieve the exact desired result.
Functional & Aesthetic Benefits
By doing a thorough evaluation, Dr. Repta will determine the most effective surgical route tailored to your exact needs and desires, resulting in functioning and aesthetically pleasing ears. Additionally, this procedure can be performed on virtually any patient of any age as long as the ears are fully grown, which often takes place around the age of five years old.
Ear shaping surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for children ages five to fourteen and is considered safe and reliable with long term positive results that can improve the self image of the individual child.
