Perhaps no other plastic surgery procedure can have such a big impact with so little change. A rhinoplasty, or nose job, result can be affected by even 1 mm of change. Because of this and because of the importance of the nose to our overall facial appearance it is very important to understand the words and phrases used to describe the nose as well as the changes that can occur during a rhinoplasty procedure.
So, what are the most important words and phrases used to describe the nose as well as rhinoplasty (nose job) procedure?

Bridge of the nose
Columella
The part of the nose between the nostrils that starting from the lip up to the tip of the nose
Ala
The left and right parts of the nose above the nostrils
Nasal tip
The area of the nose between the columella and dorsum and in between the left and right ala
Lower lateral cartilages
The two, left and right “C” shaped cartilages that form the nostrils, columella, and nasal tip
Upper lateral cartilages
The left and right square or rectangular cartilages that form the side of the nose and part of the nasal dorsum
Septum
Also known as the septal cartilage, it separates the nostrils into a left and right nostril and it takes part in forming the nasal dorsum
Nasal bones
They are located at the top of the nose near the glabella and form part of the upper sidewalls and part of the nasal dorsum
Glabella
The area in between the eyes. It’s the area that precedes the beginning of the nose where the nasal bones are
Hump
Refers to a bump or convexity of the nasal dorsum
Amorphous
“Without shape”. It is used to refer to a nasal tip that lack definition.
